Who We Are

Trash4Tokens® takes a holistic approach by working with communities, schools, shopping centres and residential estates to prevent recyclable waste from entering the environment.

Trash4Tokens adopts a ‘Fairtrade’
model
to the price we pay our Waste Pickers
for their bag of recyclables. We pay more than
the variable market rate in order to ensure a
fairer wage for our Pickers. We believe this gives
them the necessary incentive to collect the
waste and bring it to our Collection Points.

T4T is simultaneously preventing thousands
of tons of waste reaching the oceans,
cleaning up communities and providing an
income to people living in poverty.

Objectives

The aim of the Trash4Tokens campaign is to instill
pride and cleanliness by putting respect back into the
communities and encouraging hard work whilst
employing and educating the nation.

How it Works

1. Waste Pickers and Community Schools collect recyclable waste from their community. They deposit their full bags of waste at T4T Collection Points and in exchange for each bag receive a token which can be spent in the T4T Token Shop. (A Collection Point and Token Shop = A T4T Centre)
2. The Token Shop is stocked with clothes, food and
household essentials and supported by donations,
sponsors and fund-raising initiatives.
3. The recyclable waste is sold to separation
depots or recycling plants.
4. Supporter Schools, shopping centres and residential estates donate the rebate they receive for their recycling to T4T, which helps fund stock for the shops.

5. Donations from local businesses fund the day-to-day requirements for the project to work; stock for the shop, the collection bags, gloves etc.
6. Partnerships with other charities and NGOs enables us to teach communities how to reuse or up-cycle the collected waste creating further job opportunities/income streams and creating a circular economy.
7. Every new T4T centre is accompanied by educational support for the community about the importance of recycling and collecting waste.
